I think my inner child ran away…..

Why am I not more enthusiastic about spring?  I have my moments, but not feeling the joy.  I think it’s because I know that it will get cold again.  Even though I cruised the garden center, I didn’t buy anything,  experience has taught me not to plant until the last week of April, preferably the first week of May if I can wait that long.

I’m excited about planting knockout roses, but they won’t be arriving until the first of May, I’m told, so I wait…

Patience isn’t my strong point, that’s probably why the enthusiasm isn’t there.  Weather forecast isn’t good either, rain forecasted all week.

Maybe hubby and I will go to the movies, we haven’t been in such a long time, and I do want to see that new Julia Roberts flick, even though Trisher said it was a stinko…

Maybe, if I’m really lucky,  I’ll find my inner child, and take her to the movies….   Hmmmm, I wonder if that film is rated PG?

Your giggle of the day…

1st woman: Hi! My name is Jane.
2nd woman: Hi! I'm Sylvia. How'd you die?
1st woman: I froze to death.
2nd woman: How horrible!
1st woman: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, & finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
2nd woman: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.
1st woman: So, what happened?
2nd woman: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic & searched, & down into the basement. Then I went through every closet & checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, & finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack & died.
1st woman: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer---we'd both still be alive.
PRICELESS!

White Trash Cooking….

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2017/2534189897_003e954b4f.jpg

I’ve been known as a White Trash cook. I have, just ask my family…  My love of Velveeta, Miracle Whip and Crisco Frosting have firmly ensconced me in the White Trash Hall of Fame.

I actually bought this cookbook a few years back, and believe it or not, I can relate to a lot of it, right down to the pictures of a messy fridge.

Hey, there are some good recipes in here, honest. And some bad ones, things like Potato Chip Sandwich, which is potato chips and Miracle Whip between two slices of white gummy bread, mashed til the chips crush, best washed down with Pepsi Cola.  Other gems are Cooter Pie, Betty Sue’s Fried Cucumbers, and one of my personal favorites, Lucy’s Guaranteed Stewed Prunes.

And I must admit, things like Reba’s Rainbow Ice Box Cake, and Lady Divines Chicken-Asparagus Pie actually sound pretty darned good.

But I must share with your Laura Lee’s Fresh Summer Salad – you take 2 cucumbers, and cut off the ends.  Then with an end in one hand, the cucumber in the other, rub together real hard and fast.  When the liquid starts to foam, stop.  Now peel and slice them.

Meanwhile, slice 2 tomatoes in a long, low Pyrex baking dish, put in the cukes and cover with cider vinegar, salt and pepper to taste.  Chill  and serve with black-eyed peas.  Just don’t understand why you want the cucumbers to foam…  It’s a new one on me….  But I’m a huge fan of cucumbers and onions, so I might just have to give this a spin, foam and all…

Look for White Trash Cooking on eBay, you can get it on the cheap, and the pictures alone are worth the cost of the book.  It’s an experience for sure, everybody should have at least one white trash recipe for family gatherings – hey Easter is coming up, there has to be some kind of Jello salad in here to try….

Well, isn’t this the damndest thing….

Look in the right sidebar, in my blogher ads – they’re featuring one of my blogs, Personality vs. Functionality.  Cool, huh…

Electrolux Washer and Steam Dryer – GASP!!!!!!!

EWFLW_EWME_GD65IRR_905_S02

I’ve been watching Kelly Ripa using  these beauties on commercials for several weeks now, so on a whim I Googled them to see how much they cost.

They showed up on eBay, of all places, for the bargain basement price of four thousand dollars.  FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS….

JEEZ LOUISE!!!!!

And I remember when we thought Maytag was pricey!!!

Nora Roberts fans, Northern Lights is on Lifetime tonight…

Jean sent me a heads-up about this.  8pm tonight on Lifetime.  Click on the image to find out all about it…

Eye candy, a Firefox theme, Skitch and Jing…

This girly Firefox theme is perfect for spring, it’s called avante.gare.10011. 3. 1 -   here’s the link to download and install it to your Firefox browser.

And if you like the arrows and text, it’s a MAC program called Skitch.  But if you are a PC user, you can download Jing.  Hooterville uses it, and it’s similar to Skitch.  Word on the street that Skitch is now available for Windows, but so far I’ve not been able to find  download.  Here’s the link for the Jing download, though…

What is it about Twitter?

Let’s talk about Twitter this morning.  Apparently, I’m the only chirper in my group of friends.  I’ve yet to find anybody else that posts their random thoughts.  Wonder why that is?

I was a Twitterer long before it became tres chic.  It seems like it’s the buzzword this spring.  Turn on your favorite talk show, or news show, local as well as national, and that’s all you hear.  What is it about this silly little application that only lets you post 140 characters that has such broad appeal?  It’s fun, it really is.  It’s like a tiny little peek into someone’s day.  Since my days are mostly uneventful, you would think I would have a difficult time tweeting.  But oh no, motor mouth here always has something stupid to say.

So I’ll go on typing out senseless 140 word entries, like the rest of the world.  But I’m a bit smug about it, I must admit, because for once in my life I was ahead of the pack.  By a long shot, too I might add.  I’ve had Twitter on The Dish several times over the past couple of years.  I would put it in the sidebar, then revamp the site, take it off for awhile, come back to it.  I’m sure I’ll grow tired of it again, you are all most assuredly tired of it already, but for now it’s working.  I’m a part of the Twitter herd, but I am starting to get really weary of people talking about it.  It will be old news soon, the “in” crowd will go onto something else, and who knows what 'I’ll come up with next, no doubt there will be something that will ring my chimes…

Is it possible to get spring fever at 59?

I do believe it is, and I think I have it!  Gawjus weather in Heavensville, I plopped some pansies in the ground, contemplated planting onions, but didn’t get around to it.  Lindsay leaves tomorrow, back to routine, back to more coherent blogging, well maybe….

Cya round a donut….  tomorrow…

It’s that time of year….

http://www.manufacturer.com/images/product/www.emblibrary.com/0206/q/H2041_small.jpgPlant peas by St. Paddy’s Day, that’s what Mother always told me.  Well, we didn’t plant peas yesterday but we did rake and sweep and take multiple trash bags full of debris from the patio.

I, do however, have some onions to plant.  Not the same, but when spring is in the air I just want to dig in the dirt.

Old habits die hard…

I’m running a little late with my blog tonight…

Dilly is here for a couple of days.  We had a great day, hubby cleaned the patio, her friend Shawna visited this afternoon, they sat on the patio and girl talked, nothing cuter than two young women having quality time….

We had an awesome veggie, artichoke pizza at Deerhead.  Hubby took us to dinner, tomorrow we’re having a late lunch with Shawna, her little girl Bailey and Angie at Panera.  It’s a girl’s week all around….

So sweet…

Here I sit, feeding the M&M’s bites of green beans, which they love, by the way.  I feed Mollie a bite, then Maggie, always  giving each one their turn.  And they never try to eat each other’s food, even though their little heads are touching as they stand side by side, waiting for me to give them a morsel.  So many dogs would try and bully their way to getting more than their share, but not the girls.  People could learn a lot from them…

If I only had a brain, what would I do, what would I do???

I really thought today was St. Paddy’s Day.  I got my little Irish Yorkie on The Dish first thing this morning.  It wasn’t until early afternoon that I realized that the 17th is tomorrow.

Well you’ll just have to scroll down and look at the dog, I’m not going to be reposting him tomorrow!

Purina Diet…it really works…

Yesterday I was buying 2  large bags of Purina Dog Chow at Wal Mart, for my dogs.  I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think, that I had an elephant?  Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, and that I was starting Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital last time.  On the bright side though, I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simple eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. ( I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

WAL-MART won’t let me shop there anymore.

Personality vs. Functionality…

There is nothing I like more than a whimsical kitchen that just brims with personality.  I’m a huge fan of red appliances, french pigs, honey pots, all the fun things that make you smile when you walk into my kitchen.

But I’ve been transitioning toward functionality lately.  I’m tired of hauling out essential tools from underneath the counter to use that could easily be on top of my counter instead of all the things sitting there, just loaded with “personality,” that do nothing but bring me pleasure.

I walked to the garage earlier this week, and hubby had put a great cutting board on Milly, to haul to the trash.  I never used it, and it was just taking up space, so he was going to get rid of it.

It’s a really big cutting board, made of hardwood, that sets on stainless casters, it’s practically new and it’s wonderful, but it’s big so I wasn’t using it because I didn’t have the counter space.  So instead of letting him get rid of it, I went into the kitchen, cleaned off a whole area of personality and plopped down the functionality friendly cutting board, and ya know what.  I’m enjoying is so much more than I ever did that collection of vinegar bottles that I never used, and the hammered copper bowl, they were just taking up space and not used for anything.  They were there because they looked good, well to me at least they did.

I’m getting pretty smart in my old(er) age, a few years ago I wouldn’t have dreamt of giving up counter space for something so practical, when it could have been so “cute.”  Wisdom comes with age, huh…

I’m sure my family is proud of me, the boys complain every time they are home that there is no room to work!  Well, they have a nice space carved out right by the sink now, where they can prepare me meals, while I perch on a bar stool and supervise.  That’s another thing I’ve learned in my old(er) age, sit back and let them do it.  Works for me…

This bear pole dancing is so funny!

Drats, that darned camera!

Well, it’s going from bad to worse, fast.  I can’t even access the battery compartment of the camera now.  It was bad enough that I had to hold it on with a rubber band now this.

And I have to go to that wedding tomorrow, and of course I’ll want pictures. I DON’T want to buy a new one, I just got this one not long ago.  But, if I want pictures of the M&M’s, I’m gonna hafta.  Darned Canon anyway…  It should have been made better.  I’m gonna call them up and complain, won’t do any good but I’ll feel better…

Okay children of the 50's, do you remember any of this stuff???

Bulova watches, Edsels, Spic and Span, Sanka, Evening in Paris eau de Cologne, Hula Hoops, Kool and Tareyton Cigarettes, Vitalis, Stanback Headache Powder, Carter's Little Pills, Anacins, QT by Coppertone, Tangee lipstick, Ipana Toothpaste, Borax Detergent, and one of my personal favorites, Modess, because…
And if you were lucky enough to grow up in Heavensville in the 50’s and 60’s, you know doubt were on a first name basis with Marcia Yockey, an institution in the tri-state area.

And this last clip is classic, Marcia.  The much loved, zany weathergirl, would do anything for a laugh.
Be patient, it takes a bit to get to Marcia in the following video.

Let’s talk about BlogHer…

http://fayza.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/blogher.jpgWhy do I put ads on my site?  Well, when you click on them it does generate a bit of revenue, so I’m adding them to see if it might work for me as it has for other bloggers.  I must admit, BlogHer ads, unlike the Google ads I used to run, look great, are geared toward women, and actually interesting to read.  And the women from BlogHer couldn’t be nicer, I’m looking forward to the journey with them.
So give them a look from time to time, they will always be in my right sidebar, right now I’m going to check out “How to Clean your Vintage Linens.”  I have a quilt of Mother’s in the laundry basket that I need to work with…
Just wanted to give you all a heads up, since I’ve been trying to revamp and update.  It’s easy to get in a rut with blogging, I’m trying to shake it up a bit…  If there is anything you would like to see me add to the site, or even something you would like me to talk about, or shut up about, suggestions are always welcome.  Just shoot me an email…

This baby boomer’s blast from the past, the hibachi!!!

Springtime, and our thoughts turn to outdoor grilling.  I was talking to hubby earlier today about how excited I was when I was a little girl to grill out on our hibachi.  He looked at me like I was nuts and started laughing.  Now why would he do that?  Hibachi’s were a wonderful thing.  We would dump in the charcoal, ignite it, and soon we would be grilling burgers and dawgs.

Hubby rained on my parade, telling me about how bad charcoal is for you.  Geezy Pete, it was just a few little ‘ole burgers.

Of course the hibachi is long gone, replaced now by my favorite portable grill, the Weber Smokey Joe.  OMG, Hooterville fires it up and cooks the best burgers you’ve ever put in your mouth, seriously.  I wish you could all try them.

Weber 40020 Smokey Joe Gold Charcoal GrillSmokey Joe is awesome.  Not only is it cheap, it’s easy to take along.  Set it on a picnic table, and you’re in business.  It’s cold once again in Heavensville, our 70 degree temps are gone for now, but I’m dreaming of warmer days and burgers on the Joe…

Sure we’ve got the big ole kick-ass stainless gas grill, that for some reason guys just find fascinating, but not me, gas  just doesn’t give you the  flavor that charcoal does.  I would much rather fire up this little beauty and treat myself to the real meal deal.  Such a simple thing…

Spring, glorious spring….

It’s springtime in Heavensville.  A few trees are starting to leaf, the perennials are popping thru the ground, the  daffodils are in bloom.  It’s glorious.

I went for a walk earlier, you could just smell the freshness in the air.  The fragrance of the grass, the earthy smell of the soil, I swear I could have just laid down and rolled in it.  I could have!!!!  Don’t roll your eyes, haven’t any of you felt earthy like this?

Not a good idea, though, the neighbors already think I’m nutzo, can you imagine the buzz  they would spread if they saw me rolling in the grass…

Of course we’re having a big cooldown after today.  That’s the way it goes, warm gusty winds, then cooler temperatures, but oh the wonder of it all.

Little boys don’t ever grow up, the size of their toys just gets bigger…

My son, John has always loved building things, and enjoys all the toys that go along with it…  He’s putting a waterfall and a fish pond in his back yard this spring, this is him last weekend on some kind of a digger, obviously  having the time of his life.

Just had to share, it was one of those Mom moments, I’m sure he appreciates me posting it, too…  ;o)ajn

We took the girls for a walk tonight…

I bought the M&M’s one of those little thingies that ties them both together, so they walk side by side on one leash.  Um hum, sure they do…

We harnessed them up for the first time tonight, and we were off, with hubby “handling” them.  Did I just say hubby was handing them????  Well not exactly, it was more like they were handling him… Mollie wanted to walk, Maggie wanted to stop and smell the grass, and since Mollie is much stronger, she was in control.  Poor Mags, she was being pulled against her will, so we took pity on her, LC picked her up and carried her, Mollie was trudging ahead, loving every minute of it, but she was panting and not used to walking distances, so I made him pick her up, too.  So here we are, way down the road, with him holding both dogs in his arms, quite a distance from home.I was telling him it was just like he was walking with weights, but he wasn’t buying it.  By the time we got home he was panting, too. *wink*

And where was my camera?  Grrrrrr, at home, of course!  With the rubber band around it, it’s broke, remember!  It was pretty cute, though, take my word for it, those two are just the sweetest little things…

The red winged blackbird, my favorite bird

I'm sitting here, with my window open, listening to the trill of the red winged blackbird. I've always loved the sound, it takes me back in time to when I was a little girl, our trees were always full of red wings.

I've imbedded a clip of the sound for you, so when you listen to it, think of a little country girl, long ago, playing on the ditch bank on a warm spring day...  Such good memories...

Sunday dinners…

I’m having nostalgic thoughts of pot roast, and fried chicken,  mashed potatoes and gravy, oh, corn on the cob, too, with hot rolls and dessert.  Pies and cakes, all the wonderful foods that Sunday dinners are made of.

It’s not Sunday lunch either, it’s dinner, eaten at noon, and it’s wonderful.  But here I sit, with my memories, eating cheese and crackers and frozen pineapple chunks.  *sigh*  I want the good old days back again…  When the boys were little, sitting on the countertops while I cooked.  When I was a young girl, going to Grandma’ Short’s  for Sunday dinner, hoping that there would be a cousin or two to play with.  And the best Sunday dinners of all, when I would go to my other Grandma’s house, Grandma Smith.  Her food was the best!  Chicken and dumplings and homemade rolls.  It was so good…

I probably wouldn’t be so nostalgic if I would have gotten up and actually cooked myself real food.  Tonight I will.  Hubby is home at 5pm, I have pork chops thawing in the sink.  We’ll have Sunday supper, that’s what we’ll have.  That works, too!  But no gravy, no fried chops, no butter melting over the mashed potatoes and no pie, either.  Healthy Sunday supper, it’s just not the same…

Sometimes change is good….

I’m old now, I like routine, I like things to stay the same, but the Daily Dish needed a clean-up job.  That’s why the new index page, a cover page, where you can just click and go.

If anybody has any thoughts, suggestions, criticism, etc., email me, and let me know.  I want this site to be easier to navigate, not more difficult.

This looks promising, I’ll give it a try tonight…

asec

And I’m not finished yet…

I come home, I’m back on the computer again, still have the windows open, enjoying the fresh air.

I hear a tractor…..  It’s the farmer in the field next to us, he’s spreading manure – HE’S SPREADING MANURE…. M-A-N-U-R-E!!!!!!

OMG, the smell is horrendous, it must be pig poop.  Now I have to close the windows!  Geez Louise, so much for the country life, I can’t even enjoy fresh air!

Sometimes things just don’t work out like you plan…

It was a wonderful morning in Heavensville, warm, breezy, sunny, I  worked on the computer all morning,  promising myself that when the temperature got to 70 degrees, I would take a break and take the M&M’s for a ride on Milly.

Sure enough, the temperature went to 70, so I poured coffee into my favorite Starbucks travel mug, ummmm, well it wasn’t very hot, even though it had been in the carafe that is supposed to keep it steaming, but that’s okay, it’s kinda warm, it will be fine…

I grab a healthy snack for us, a couple of multi-grain crackers for them, no doggie biscuits in this house, those things have nasty stuff in them, a Weight Watcher oatmeal cookie for moi, put them on the golf cart, put on my sunglasses, grab hubby’s lightweight jacket and put it on, after all it’s breezy, and roll out of the garage.

Of course, by now, the sun has gone in, no need for the sunglasses, and even though it’s 70 degree’s, forget breezy,  it’s escalated to really windy, but that’s okay, it feels really “brisk,” so I zip up my  jacket and roll on down to the creek, my favorite spot to sit and ponder and drink my coffee.

I break up the crackers for the girls, unwrap my cookie, and a big gust of wind comes by and blows the crackers on Mildred’s  floorboard, where I promptly step on one and crush it to smithereens, the cookie wrapper blows to heaven knows where, and when I take a drink of my coffee the lid wasn’t on tight and the damn coffee spills all down the front of hubby’s jacket, soaking my chest and  the whole jacket sleeve.  Good thing it wasn’t hot, huh?

And the dogs decide they don’t really want to eat those crackers, they would have probably rather had doggie biscuits instead, and they are blowing off the cart anyway, and my puny little diet cookie that I ate in one bite tasted stale, but I’m still undeterred.

So, I  continue on my way, still determined to enjoy the “weather.”  By now it’s blowing gale force winds, the sky is looking rather ominous, and my chest and arm are freezing because they’re wet, and the girls are practically blowing off the the seat from the force of the wind!  And to top it all off, I have on my bluetooth headset, I’m using it to talk to hubby, and some old guy is getting his mail and looking at me like I’ve lost it.

Okay, think about it, here is this stupid woman with a wet jacket, hanging on to two little dogs for dear life, driving her golf cart in a windstorm and appearing to be talking and laughing to herself.

Oh wow, can’t wait for summer…  This was so much fun, today!

Helena Christensen eats like a pig???

pig

I just read about her in People Online.  She said she is consumed by thoughts of food 75% of the time and eats like a pig.

Hey, me,  too!!  I’m totally obsessed by food I and eat like a pig, too…Finally, someone I can relate to.  My kind of woman, just tellin’ it like it is!!!

Remember when….

We used to wear “things” in our hair.  Cute “things”  like barrettes, and headbands, scarves and scrungies, even fake hairpieces.  Oh, I had a whole drawer full of ‘em. We didn’t look silly, at least we didn’t think we did, we were young and we thought we looked trendy…

Today, however, I wasn’t trying to look trendy, heaven forbid, not at my age, I look stupid with anything in my hair, but I was working on this &*$%@*# computer, and my hair kept falling forward, and so I grabbed one of the dog clippie things and anchored my hair back with it, and promptly forgot I had it on.

Hubby comes home, takes a look at me and says, “why in the hell do you have a dog barrette in your hair?”  Oh, Geezy Pete, I forgot all about it, and long gone are the days when he would have smiled and thought it looked cute,  now he thought it just looked stupid.  And he’s right, of course.  Why do we have to give up so much when we get older because we no longer look good????  It’s just not right!

He could have been more tactful, though, well he could have, darned man anyway!  Men Schmen!!!

5 things that put me in a good mood…

  • Pictures from Hooterville from March 28th, 2007 of trees in bloom.  That isn’t long to wait…
  • Mollie chasing Maggie around the sofa in the living room
  • Sunshine and green shoots coming thru the ground. I’ll be eating chives in a couple of weeks, now
  • Talking to Linds, she always makes me laugh
  • A banana split, *sigh* which I can’t have, so I’m not in such a good mood after all…

This is for all the Gramma’s out there..

Mary Lee sent me this today, just had to share.  Can’t you just see a little girl saying this?

She was in the bathroom putting on her makeup under the watchful
eyes of her young granddaughter as she'd done many times before. After
she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, 'But
Gramma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!'

I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye....

It’s those simple things again…

It was late, hubby and the M&M’s were fast asleep, and I had been engrossed in a good book.  I switched off the light, rolled over on my side and put my hand in Maggie’s bed, not touching her.

After a bit I felt this little paw slip under my hand.  I wrapped my fingers around it, and she licked my hand and then let out this huge sigh.

So much  joy from such a simple little thing…

Hey, this is worth a try, since I can’t remember Jack Schitt….

Researchers in the United Kingdom found that test subjects who doodled while listening to a recorded message had a 29 percent better recall of the message's details than those who didn't doodle. The findings were published in Applied Cognitive Psychology.

"If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull telephone conversation, they may start to daydream," study researcher Professor Jackie Andrade, of the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth, said in a news release issued by the journal's publisher. "Daydreaming distracts them from the task, resulting in poorer performance. A simple task, like doodling, may be sufficient to stop daydreaming without affecting performance on the main task."

"In psychology, tests of memory or attention will often use a second task to selectively block a particular mental process," Andrade said. "If that process is important for the main cognitive task, then performance will be impaired. My research shows that beneficial effects of secondary tasks, such as doodling, on concentration may offset the effects of selective blockade."

In everyday life, Andrade said, doodling "may be something we do because it helps to keep us on track with a boring task, rather than being an unnecessary distraction that we should try to resist doing."

Better than Sex aka Robert Redford Dessert

Better Than Robert Redford Dessert
adapted from Family Circle
kemond

Lord Have Mercy,  does this ever look good!!!!

When I published the lemon desserts, I totally forgot to put in our family favorite, especially John’s favorite, Better than Sex aka Robert Redford Dessert.

And since he’s coming home this weekend, I’m going to make it for him, and since it’s easier to Google the recipe than to find it in my cookbook, I was looking online when I found  this variation.

Holy Schmoly, does this look awesome or what????  But no, I’m going to make our tried and true, and I need to get my original version  added to the lemon dessert section as well as the family favorites.  It’s wonderful…

You can get the recipe for this adapter Family Circle version on Jan Can Cook.

Okay, ladies, there is something for everyone here.  Great springtime desserts for you, wonderful for Easter, too.  Access by clicking on the lemon in the right sidebar.

I’ve been doing so many things this month on the computer, if you sent me a lemon recipe and I didn’t get it on here, please send me an email, let me know.  Even though I did try and drag everyone’s recipes into a separate folder, I  might have missed somebody.

Enjoy, these all look absolutely amazing!!!!   And thanks to everybody who took the time to send me their lemon favorites.

I also did a little long overdue site maintenance.  I put up links again to my other recipe pages, as well as all of my other blogs.  It’s all in the sidebar.

When life throws you a lemon, you have to make lemonade…

mo_lemonade_30 copy

More specifically, the great lemon desserts you all sent me.  I have errands to run, some actual “work” that I have to do  on the computer, but the lemon desserts are all ready to go, I just have to index and publish them.  I’ll do it  later today.  I’ll give you all a little sunshine.

And I did have sun peeking thru the clouds this morning,  specifically two little dogs that always make me smile.  They sleep in, if the house is quiet, they seldom get up before 10 am.  Mollie always barks when she’s ready to get up, she won’t jump off of the bed.

I heard her a few minutes ago, and I go in the bedroom and she was standing in the middle of the bed, doing her morning stretches.  Maggie woke up, got out of her bed, she had to stretch, too, then here they came.  Mollie crawled in my lap, Maggie jumped on me and gave me a sloppy kiss, and I smiled.  Even on sad days, life is good…

Don’t put off calling an old friend….

For a few weeks now, I’ve been thinking, “I need to call Ramona and see how she is.”  She’s older now, seventy-seven and I haven’t talked to her since last fall.  Obviously she’s been on my mind, as I posted her recipe just a few days ago for her wonderful Butterfly Salad.

This morning, I was reading the obituaries, which I always do, and she passed away.  I feel so sad, that I didn’t listen to my inner voice telling me to call her.  Learn from my mistake, if there is someone in your life that you care about and that you haven’t taken time to call lately, do it, right now, today.  Don’t put it off, tomorrow may be too late…  Rest in peace, sweet Ramona, you were a kind and gracious lady…

Random thoughts on a gray winter’s day…

  • Smooth jazz playing, makes the morning unfold softly.
  • Breakfast was half a bagel with cream cheese, chunks of fresh pineapple and strawberries, hot coffee made with freshly ground Sumatra beans, which by the way, I always drink with Fat Free Half and Half, a staple in our house.  I never looked at label until today – the bastards stuck corn syrup in there – it’s the 2nd ingredient, too, so it’s laced with it.  grrrrrrr
  • Sheets in the washer, floor of the bedroom piled high with pillows and blankets, with dog beds thrown on top.  I just walked by, Mollie had somehow managed to climb on top of them all and was  fast asleep in her bed. I gave her kisses and moved her bed to the floor.
  • Shoulda taken a picture, camera is broken, and it’s not that old.  If hubby can’t fix it, I’ll either have to wrap it with a rubber band, which will look geeky, or buy a new one.  *sigh* always something.
  • Reflecting on Michele Obama last night, she looked nice, but why do women wear sleeveless dresses in the winter?  Don’t their arms get cold???  Its just not right… I’m from the old school, no white until after Memorial Day, then retire it after Labor Day, no patent leather in the winter.   Just makes sense…
  • Trying a new hairdresser next week.  I’ve gone to the same one for years, she’s a sweetie, but she hasn’t given me a good cut in months.  Time to try somebody new.  I don’t like change…  I’m old now, I want things to stay the same…
  • Still looking for the hammered daisy knockoff earrings that Diane Lane wore in Nights of Rodanthe.  I’ve Googled myself silly, can’t find anything about them.  If anybody has any thoughts about this, email me.
  • Always amazed at the trust my dogs have in me.  Maggie had a couple of snarlies on her tummy.  She lay on her back yesterday, no problem letting me trim them.  Sweet little dog…
  • Really thinking a lot about salad lately.  I always do that this time of year, I’m hungry for green.  Animal instinct, probably…
  • I’m outta here, going to work on those lemon desserts later.

Do any of you really want to see Paula Deen’s ass?

Probably not, but you know me, I’ll post anything.  Ewwwwwwww, no big girl panties, either!

Aren’t you glad I shared?

Hey, it’s late, I’ve been in the whirlpool too long tonight, the steam has fogged what’s left of my brain… Maybe I’ll delete this tomorrow, but probably not…..

The Oscars, my two cents worth…

Kate Winslet – looked amazing, old world movie star glamour with her dress choice, and she has a real body, not a twig.  Loved it when she told her Dad to whistle.  He was so debonair in his hat!

Jennifer Aniston – what was up with the braid in her hair.  I’ve seen her look awesome, but last night wasn’t one of her better evenings.  The dress was not that attractive, and I was surprised because you would have thought she would have gone all out because of Angelina Jolie being there.  But, hey, good for her, maybe she didn’t feel the need.

Angelina Jolie – the emeralds worked. I still don’t like her, but those emeralds were stunners.

Sarah Jessica Parker – what was up with the boobs?  Implants?  They looked silly.

Goldie – older, heavier, still adorable.

Sophia Loren, ageless.

Sean Penn – arughhhh, can’t stand the man, why doesn’t he leave his politics at home “You commie, homo-loving sons of guns.”  And why didn’t he thank his long suffering wife.  He is so obnoxious!

Reese Witherspoon, adorable, but her dress got hit by the ugly stick.

Mickey Rourke, disappointed that he didn’t win, only because his dog died, silly, yeah, I know….

I thought Beyonce looked amazing, she has a real body, too.

It wasn’t a memorable night, but I did like the theater in the round and the special effects of the backlit screen.

Its just not the same as it in the old days with Johnny and Bob and Whoopi.

It’s been one of those days….

The M&M’s have acted like a couple of little sh*ts all day long!   I swear, dogs can be as naughty as little kids….  Bark, bark, bark, whine, whine – I’ve been really busy, and they are so spoiled, they weren’t getting enough attention, so they’ve just been little terrors.  I know, I know, it’s my fault for spoiling them, but enough already!   If this keeps up, they are going to have to take me to obedience school!

Egads, what a day!  But I did make hubby a nice dinner, including Ramona’s Butterfly Salad, which he adores.  Barb made it for her Valentines Day Party, and it reminded me that it’s been awhile since we’ve had it, and I had fresh strawberries and pineapple, and I sectioned some oranges to put in it – it was wonderful.

I’ve gotten quite a few lemon recipes, thanks to all of you for helping me out with this.  I’m going to post them later this week, when things settle down a bit.

I’m also revamping the spring salad pages, and I will be posting our great salad recipes.  I would love to have more to add to the collection, so if any of you have salads to share, email me at munchiebusiness@gmail.com, and I’ll include them.

And yes, I know, you all want to know what Ramona’s Butterfly Salad is like.  Ramona is a wonderful lady that I’ve known for several years.  She is in her early eighties now, and she’s just delightful, and one of the best cooks I’ve ever known.  So here’s her recipe, this is absolutely wonderful!  If you blend the dressing for quite a while, it becomes as thick as honey.  I usually set it out of the fridge for a bit before I drizzle it on salads, it’s so thick.  It’s a sweet dressing, good on any kinds of greens.

I’ve also had great success making roasted sweet potato salad with it.  I just roast sweet potato chunks tossed with olive oil in my oven until they are tender and starting to brown, cool them, toss them with red onion slices, dried cranberries, walnuts and this dressing, then chill in the fridge.  It’s awesome!

And now, I’m going to cuddle my little monsters for awhile, even when they’re naughty, they’re still adorable!  Oh what a sucker I am…

Ramona's Butterfly Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing

My friend Ramona gave me this recipe last year. Her daughter, Jane, made it for a brunch, and she LOVED it. I love it, too - the dressing is so thick, it is like honey.

It's a spectacular salad, good with chunks of cooked chicken tossed in, also... I made it recently and substituted strawberries and grapes for the kiwi, and used pecans instead of almonds - it was yummy!  This works well with any kind of fruit.

~ Jan

Salad:

1/2 C. (or so) sliced almonds, toasted

1 T. olive oil

1 T. sugar

4 crisp romaine hearts (or a bag of loose romaine heart lettuce, divided among 4 plates)

2 kiwi, peeled and sliced

15 oz. can mandarin oranges, drained

1/2 C. (or so) coarsely grated Parmesan cheese

Poppy seed dressing:

3/4 C. sugar plus 1 1/2 T.

1 t. dry mustard

1/2 C. chopped onion

1 t. salt

1/3 C. balsamic vinegar

1 C. mazola oil

1 1/2 T. poppy seeds

To make salad:

In a skillet, stir together almonds, olive oil and sugar. Cook over medium to medium-low heat until almonds smell "toasty." Allow to cool slightly.

On 4 plates, arrange equal amounts of romaine hearts, kiwi slices, mandarin oranges and Parmesan. Sprinkle with almonds.

To make dressing:

Whisk together all ingredients until you can no longer feel the sugar grains (because they have dissolved in the liquid) and the whisk leaves a trail in the thickened mixture. Drizzle, to taste, over plates. Makes about 3 cups, so you will have leftover dressing.

NOTE: When I make this, I find it necessary to blend dressing ingredients in my blender to get the silky smooth, honey like consistency, I prefer. ~ jan

The way it was….

House_in_Spring I was going thru old photographs today, taking the proverbial trip down memory lane, and I came across pictures of our last home that I had uploaded to Tripod several years ago.

It was a wonderful house, built in 1929, in a historic part of Heavensville.  People called it the Gingerbread House, because of it’s whimsical look.  Hubby and I bought it from the elderly lady who owned it without even going inside.

It wasn’t for sale, but her husband had passed away and I wrote her a letter and asked her if she would be interested in selling it to us.

She was a bit eccentric, she called and told us we could come over and see the outside, but we couldn’t go inside.  She priced it to us in the yard, and we bought it right then.  I had always loved the house, actually we lived just around the corner from it,  and this was our one chance to live there, as there had only been two previous owners.  So we gave her a down payment on the spot,  with hubby assuring me not to worry, that regardless of what it looked like inside, he would restore it.  LC  can do anything, he totally gutted every room in the house and restored it to it’s original look.  It was a mess inside, but luckily, it had never been “remodeled, “ all of the original rooms were intact.  There was never a front walk, and the only landscaping was the azaleas, so we built a flagstone sidewalk and did major renovations to the grounds as well.

We sold it a few years ago when we moved to the country.  Was I sad to see it go, naturally, but I was ready for a change.  It was not an easy house for me, too many stairs to climb,  and old houses are drafty.   And the chance for  a country girl to go back to the country to live doesn’t happen often,  I  much prefer where we live now.

The garage was an exactly replica of the house with unfinished maid quarters above, and if you look at the pictures, you will see a fish pond and a waterfall coming out of the front of the garage.  This was all original from when the house was was built, we didn’t change anything.  The pattern on the brick was called skintled brick, the brick layer laid the bricks in an uneven, irregular pattern, and also included greek symbols in various places in the pattern he designed.  If you look closely at one of the pictures of the front of the house, you will see an upside down  horseshoe pattern built into the brick.

It had the original leaded glass windows, thirty-three of them if I remember correctly, and therefore no storm windows, because it would have taken away from the look of the house, which I’m sure contributed to the uneven temperatures in the summer and winter months.  We lived there for eight years, and I enjoyed every minute of it, but things change, and it’s not the same anymore.

The big oak tree you see in the right corner died, and the new owner cut down the tree you see framing the front of the house.  The house still had it’s original roof, which would have lasted many more years, but the current owner  decided to reroof it this year, and he painted the exterior a boring beige.  It just doesn’t have the charm that it did when we lived there, of course I realize that it was the way I liked it, obviously he doesn’t have the same taste.

The azaleas you see blooming in this picture are still intact, though, we no doubt will drive by when they are in bloom, as they are just stunning.

It really was a magical old house.  As I looked at the pictures this afternoon, I laughed at how overdecorated and girly it was.  Would I do the same thing today, probably, well maybe not so much silk greenery, but I’ve always told you I’m a clutterer and a nester, and boy was this cluttered!

I don’t have pictures of the upstairs or the basement uploaded.  Some day I need to go through more pictures and upload everything to  a current server and include those as well.  Hubby finished the basement, putting in a commercial kitchen and building a family room, too, the basement really had a lot of character.

If you like old houses, I think you’ll enjoy looking at the pictures I took of the interior.  It really was a special house.  Here’s the click for the pix .

Are you looking for an escape this weekend?

Savannah BreezeI’m reading a great book, oh it’s such a fun read, ladies.  I downloaded the ebook from my library, you might be able to do the same from yours.  If not, either borrow or buy it, it’s really entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis -

Southern belle BeBe (Bay-Bay) Loudermilk has lost all her worldly possessions, thanks to a brief but disastrous relationship with the gorgeous Reddy, an "investment counselor" who turns out to be a con man. All that's left is a ramshackle 1950s motel on Tybee Island—an eccentric beach town that calls itself a drinking village with a fishing problem.

Breeze Inn is a place where the very classy BeBe wouldn't normally be caught dead, but with no alternative, she moves into the manager's unit, vowing to make magic out of mud. The work is grueling, especially dealing with the bad-tempered caretaker, a fishing captain named Harry who's trying to earn enough dough to get his boat out of hock. With the help of Harry and her junking friend Weezie, BeBe soon has the motel spiffed up and attracting paying guests.

Look what Carlene sent me this morning….

Who would have ever thought of doing this???  This ranks right up there with peeling the egg by blowing it through the hole video.  Oh, I need a life really bad….

It’s Lemon Paczki time at Donut Bank…

do

They only have Paczki’s for a few days before Mardi Gras each year.  And of course, since I’m a total lemon freak, regardless of what stupid diet I’m on,  it all falls by the wayside when these lemon, sugary donuts are available.

I thought they were having them last week, and Hooterville came to visit for a few days, just for a Paczki fix.  But when we went to through the drive thru, they didn’t have them.

I got the wrong week! Oh my, she was not a happy camper at all…

Kingston, the little pig that could….

Jean sent me this video, it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face on this cold winter’s evening.  This little guy is so tiny, and so adorable, it makes you just want to go out and buy a piglet!!!!  Seriously…

True Story…

George Phillips, an elderly man, from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"

He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.

Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."

George said, "Okay."

He hung up the phone and counted to 30.

Then he phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them." and he hung up.

Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

Moral of the story: Don't mess with old people

The quest for those lemon recipes continues…

lemoncake

Veronica has sent me a couple of recipes, one for Paula Deen’s Lemon Blossoms, and a recipe for rice pudding with lemon sauce.  I’ve also been cruising the food blogs, and I’ve seen several mentions of Ina Garten’s Lemon Cake.

Even Oprah has joined the fray, posting the Barefoot Contessa’s recipe.  One blogger makes hers with Meyer lemons, which I have a snowball’s chance in hell of finding in Heavensville.  But you you want to take a peek at this, here’s the link

Has anybody made this?  I don’t want to waste a badzillion calories on a ho-hum recipe that some of you haven’t tested and approved.  Because we all know, that moi, here, will eat whatever dessert is in front of me, regardless of the taste.  I’m even a fan of Little Debbies.  *blush*  Hey, those peanut butter wafer thingies are good, except they are probably off the shelves now due to the peanut recall.

Do you remember Revere Ware?

http://i3.iofferphoto.com/img/item/792/967/76/jjikxvmZSgVWZob.jpg

When I was growing up Mother had a set of Revere Ware, just like this.  It was always my job to clean the copper bottoms.

The set is long gone, she gave it up for my Le Creuset cookware  that I recycled to her in the 80’s when I discovered Magnalite.  Except  I did keep the 9” orange Le Creuset skillet, and I’m so glad I did because I use it often, especially when I make cornbread.  But back to the saga of the recycled cookware…

I got tired of the Magnalite, and started buying Calphalon, but I kept the Magnalite, until Ryan confiscated it, because he, too, is a nostagia buff, and now the Calphalon is gone, and I have stainless steel, a whole assortment of different brands of stock pots, dutch oven and saucepans, instead of a “set",” which I kind of think is kind of interesting…

And then my pieces of Le Creuset went by the wayside in Mother’s later years, she got rid of it when I upgraded her to cobalt blue Chantal.

I now have her cobalt Chantal, but it just doesn’t have the memories associated with it that the Le Creuset and the Revere Ware does.  Drats, why did Mother get rid of that cookware anyway!  She never threw out anything, well, except for my Terry Lee doll, which I have never quite recovered from.  That doll is worth major money, now!

Maybe I should just buy myself one piece of Revere Ware, and an orange Le Creuset roaster like I used to have.  Maybe that would satisfy my little bout of nostalgia….  Yeah, Jan, let’s see, that Le Creuset roaster is about $250, now, and vintage Revere Ware goes for about $50 a pan on eBay, so I could rack up $300 really fast on a trek down memory lane.

Maybe I should rethink this and get nostalgic over a set of vintage salt and pepper shakers.  I could probably get into them for about $25.00…

Lindsay has bought Ryan several pieces of Le Creuset in the last few years, because he is reliving his childhood, too.  Maybe I could just borrow one of his pieces until the mood passes.

Egads, I’m sitting in the living room, typing this on my laptop, and Mags is on the back of my chair throwing a hissy.  Yep, you guessed it, she wants me to go to bed.

She does this every night now, at 7:30 or 8:00 p.m.  I don’t want to go to bed, and she is relentless.  I’ve gotta get control of my life, and my dog….  and forget about the stupid cookware!

You all know I’m a sucker for cute kids and dogs…

tiger_woods_shows_off_his_tiny_saplings_in_golf_magazine Tiger Woods latest family portrait.  Is this not the most adorable picture, ever?  His little girl is just precious!  And the pooches, oh my…

Yeah, the wife and petite bebe are cute, but the little girl and the dogs steal the show…  He’s a lucky, lucky man, Tiger Woods…

Ohhhhhhh, don’t these look wonderful???

These beauties were in today’s Martha Stewart Newsletter.  I arrowed my faves.  Want the recipes?  Sure thing, just click on the picture, recipes are available from Martha online for all of these delectable, lovely, calorie laden treats…..  The woman is a wonder!

I just don’t get it….

Every day there is a new photograph of Octomommy, out and about, without any of her children.  Today’s picture is of her at the mall, at the MAC makeup counter.

I realize the eight babies are still in the hospital, but where are her other six children?  I don’t understand how she has so much free time.

I guess times have changed a lot since I had just two little boys.  I was always home taking care of them.  That’s what Mothers did.  Or we took them with us.

I also don’t understand how this woman, with fourteen children and no money, can afford the MAC counter.  This stuff isn’t cheap….  Am I missing something here?

I’m looking for a really great lemon dessert…

Spring is coming, and nothing says spring like lemon desserts.  Lindsay and I are both wild about anything lemon, and our goal this year is to find two “knock your socks off” lemon desserts…  You know, the kind that make you want to lick your plate and groan…

Carlene gave me some great ideas earlier today, lemon flan and lemon egg custard were a couple of her suggestions.

If any of you are lemonaholics like we are, and you have an absolutely great recipe, please, please, send it along to me.

I’ve made Ann Lander’s Lemon Pie for years now.  It’s just awesome,  and I scrapped a recipe for it last year.  If you’re interested, you can access it here.

Oops, I just realized I haven’t put my email addy back up since my webpage remodel, but if you don’t have it, email me at munchiebusiness@gmail.com.

Thanks in advance for anything you can give me.

I’m not a Mickey Rourke fan, however…

adogg

In a recent interview he said that he likes little dogs because you can hold them close, smell their fur and feel their hearts beating.

Very well put, Mr. Rourke.  I understand this feeling completely.  There is nothing quite like a little furry soul snuggling on your chest, feeling it’s warm breath against your hand as you stroke it’s fur.  You have total trust from these sweet little creatures.  He gets it, he really gets it!  Maybe this guy isn’t so bad after all…

My favorite things…

As I put together the slide show you are looking at, I realized that my favorite things are “things” I’ve had for years.

I’m not the type of person that changes my house.  I’m not constantly rearranging or replacing things.  A lot of what I have has been around for a long time.  I don’t get tired of “things,” I keep them and enjoy them even more with each passing year.

The rag doll that Mother and I made with the cinnamon stick hair is nesting against  a needlepoint pillow Veronica that gave me.  The blue dishes you glimpse at in the rooster picture are dishes that a friend of Mother’s gave to me years ago.  I have a lot of blue willow dishes that I almost got rid of in the 90’s,  but I didn’t, and now I’m so glad that I kept them.  But these dishes, with their scalloped edges, are even prettier than the blue willow, I think.

I typed on Daddy’s typewriter as a little girl, it’s in my living room now, and I often touch it as I pass by.  There are a lot of good memories associated with this old typewriter, it’s one of my very favorites.

When hubby and I were first married we attended a ceramics class.  Ceramics were a big thing in the 70’s, but we only took the one class.  I painted an ugly mushroom canister set, but LC, who was always really artistic, painted this little bugle boy.  He is the sweetest thing, and sweeter even still since I sat on him in the car on the way home from the ceramics studio and broke his bugle.  Hubby glued him together, and we’ve always laughed about it.  When things aren’t perfect it sometimes makes them more memorable.

And the picture that resides above my fireplace is from my teenage years.  I always kept it, usually stored in an attic at various homes we’ve lived in, but when we moved here I tried putting it above the fireplace, and that’s where it has stayed.  After all these years I found the perfect spot for it.

Jean took several pictures of my favorite things when she was here last week.  I’ll rotate this slide show in the coming days and post more of my favorites.  I have a houseful of them.  I’m sure all of you do as well…

My most memorable Valentines Day….

Surrprisingly, it’s not the years I got  flowers, candy or dinner reservations in favorite restaurants.  It’s not breakfast in bed, or cuddling by the fire, nor is it going to a special movie or getting a sentimental card…

No, my most memorable Valentine’s Day was in the mid 80’s when hubby bought me a sweat suit.

A sweat suit!!!!!  OMG, I was so upset.  You have no idea!  As I look back, my reaction was totally wrong, he tried, but boy did he not get it right that year!   I must have been hormonal, because I remember giving him a really hard time.  Shame on me…

I did get flowers yesterday, that was a nice surprise after almost thirty-eight years.

Ya know, I wouldn’t mind a sweat suit so much now, but I can guarantee he would never get me one, he still talks about the year of the Big Oops.  Ain’t love grand…

What a great pix!

Isn’t this little squirrel the cutest thing?  Hooterville is visiting for a few days and of course as soon as she gets here, we’re in the car headed for Burdette Park.  The ducks were surrounding us, one was actually trying to get in the car, she saw Ole Blue, the resident Blue Heron, and then she took this picture of the squirrel.  Nature is the BEST!!!!!!

Are we ever going to get to eat peanut butter again…

I still have a jar of Jif on my shelf, and despite assurances from Smuckers that it wasn’t manufactured in that Georgia facility, I can’t quite bring myself to eat it, but then I can’t  bring myself to throw it away either.  My theory is, it’s half empty, and it didn’t make me sick so far, so I’m holding onto it just in case I have an insatiable urge and dip into it with a tablespoon as I’ve been known to do…

But, for now, I’m having my morning toast with Jelly only.  It’s just not right….

Life just isn’t worth living without peanut butter…

Nutter Butter®-Banana Pudding Trifle from Southern LivingAnd there was a recipe in this month’s Southern Living for banana pudding made with Nutter Butters.  Ryan is drooling over the idea of my making it for him, but I don’t know if we can eat Nutter Butters either…

Yeah, I know you’re all thinking, “dang, this looks good.”  Here’s the recipe, enjoy…

Roarrrrrrrrrrrrrr

If I get one more phone call telling me I’ve been prequalified for a mortage, I’m gonna BLOW!!!!!!!!!!

I’m on the no call list, but I’m getting five or six calls a day, all this prerecorded crap about mortgages.  HELLO, I don’t WANT a mortgage.  I’m gonna have to change my phone number, i don’t want to, but this is driving me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong….

Veronica emailed me earlier today, she’s always interested in hearing about the “good old days,” this request was for what I ate as a child… So here I go, back into those memories.  This one’s for you, V…

First of all, I was privy to more packaged snacks than most kids growing up in the 50’s.  Something i didn’t realize at the time, I just took it for granted.  Since my Mother worked in the drugstore, and that’s where I landed daily after school from second grade until high school, I was a walking encyclopedia on the different kinds of candy bars, chips, pop and let’s not forget comic books like Archie and Veronica, Little Lulu, Baby Huey and celebrity magazines, like Photoplay and Screen Stories.

My snack of choice in those days was one of Mother’s hand chipped iced fountain cokes and a ten cent bag of Fritos.  And if I was in a candy bar mood, it was usually Zero, Hollywood or Payday. But I did love red liquorice whips and jawbreakers, too.   I could write a book on junk food of the 50’s, but that’s a whole other blog entry.

What I ate at home is nothing like what we eat today.  The grocery store was used for staples, Mother grew and canned pretty much everything we ate, supplemented by food that was given to us by my Aunts.http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71W99DARA1L._SL500_AA280_.gif

We always had a big garden, which she plowed with a one wheeled plow.  It was backbreaking work, but she always managed to get the soil turned over early in the spring, and she would rake the dirt, make rows for the seeds and I would walk behind her, dropping the seeds in the furrows.  We would have winter onions that would be ready to eat mid-March, and she would throw lettuce seed down on top of the snow in February, so that we would have an early crop of spring lettuce to make wilted salad with the onions.  We had gooseberry bushes, cherry and apple trees, and a big strawberry patch, Mother worked full time and still managed to preserve food for us for the winter months.  She was really a remarkable woman.http://www.berryhilllimited.com/productimages/27702b.jpg

We always had jars of  pickled beets, sauerkraut, pickles and relishes.  Unless lettuce came from the garden, we seldom bought it at the store, we supplemented our meals with the canned relishes instead.  She would shred heads of cabbage from the garden on a slaw cutter similar to the one in this picture.  Then she would ferment it with salt in 5 gallon crocks weighted down with a brick setting in a plate on top of the crock.  Once the fermentation process took place, the cabbage would turn to sauerkraut and she would can it.  It was quite a process, and the smell was so pungent the whole house would reek of sauerkraut.

My family butchered their own pigs, and there was always Ball quart jars of canned sausage, young pullets (chickens), and my favorite, pork tenderloin, put up for the winter.  We had a smoke house and she would sugar cure hams and bacon in late November.  She would dry rub the meat with salt, brown sugar and spices, and then hang the cured meat from the rafters in brown burlap feed sacks.  We couldn’t put canned food in the smokehouse, because it would freeze, and our house was small, so our canned food was stored under the beds, and every night she would send me in for cans of vegetables so that she could make dinner.  She would go to the smokehouse with a butcher knife, take down the meat and cut slices from  it on a wooden chopping block, then bring it in and fry it in a black iron skillet.

Aunt Idalene would boil the pigs head when they slaughtered the meat, grind the meat from it and make head cheese, and also mincemeat.  I hated both of them, but I loved it when she would pickle pigs feet.  She would also  soak dried corn in lye water, and after many rinses, the outer husk of the corn would come off, and she would boil it and make hominy.  Oh, I loved hominy, , it was so good.  Hubby doesn’t care for it, but when it’s fried in bacon grease with lots of onions, it’s just awesome!

We always had a lot of tomatoes, we would usually can almost a hundred jars of tomatoes in the summer, as well as green beans, corn and those wonderful bird egg beans.

It wasn’t until I got in high school that we had “convenience foods.”  And those consisted  of just a few items.  The first was Kraft Spaghetti, the kind that came in the green box with the seasoning packet.  We added hamburger and a can of tomato paste to the seasoning packet, it made just the right amount for two people.  I really loved that spaghetti, and Jeno’s Pizza, too.  It was a crust mix, a packet of italian herb toppings and a jar of pizza sauce.  We always browned hamburger and put on it also, and then sprinkled it with parmesan cheese and baked it on a cookie sheet.  I used to have friends on the weekend for pizza parties,  we would listen to the Beatles on the radio, eat pizzas and drink Pepsi’s out of bottles.  Some evenings she would bake a Swanson Pot Pie, either chicken or beef, and we would have it with a salad on tv trays in the living room watching Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on the evening news.  This wasn’t until my high school years, though, we didn’t get television until I was twelve.  By this time she was buying more from the grocery store, we loved Wishbone Italian Dressing in the shaker bottle, and would always have that on our salads.  She would cut the lettuce really fine, add celery and onions, and mix it in that big stainless steel bowl that I now have and use daily.

Mother always had a sweet tooth, so there were always cookies,  cake or pie in her big tupperware container.  She had a bundt pan, which she treasured, and would constantly make different kinds of bundt cakes, her lemon bundt was always my favorite.  We always had jellies and jam, primarily strawberry, blackberry and apricot.  My Aunt Mae made pear honey, and we would have pints of that as well.

http://static.grupthink.com/answer/6/60f51814f9474e5c146efd13295de569We would buy sweet rolls from the grocery store, usually Bunny Bread products, raspberry filled danish was one of her favorites, but the boys remember vividly what her very favorite was, bear claws!  We had a toaster oven, that Ryan has now, and it had a little drawer on the bottom, and she would warm a bear claw in that drawer and drink it with coffee in the morning.  I was never a fan like she was, she loved bear claws her whole life.

If you remember me talking about my childhood in earlier posts, you will know that all of this was accomplished with no running water and water heated on the stove in a kettle.  I can remember a time when we didn’t even have a pump in the kitchen, we drew our water from a well.  There was no bathroom, no air conditioning, a coal stove that had to be filled with coal every day and the ashes dumped, and we lived on a dirt road that got so muddy and rutted in the winter that we would have to walk a half a mile to the main road where we left our car parked.

It was really a difficult life, but I didn’t know anything else, so to me it was normal.  When I put it all to paper it does sound a bit mind-boggling, probably a lot of you are thinking that you could never live that way.  You might just surprise yourself, you do what you have to do to survive.  It wasn’t a bad life at all, just different from the way it is now…

Your daily dose of cuteness…

I can honestly say I’ve never thought about having sex with the president!

Geezy Pete, I was just reading the Drudge Report, apparently there is a New  York Times Blog about how many women are dreaming about having sex with the president…

Well, it just never crossed my mind, and now that I’m thinking about it, I can absolutely, positively say without a doubt that the man has zero sex appeal.  Bill Clinton, however….

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood….

It’s a sunny morning in Heavensville, highs forecasted in the upper 60’s, the snow has melted, my chives have popped thru the ground, it was even warm enough to take Milly for a spin yesterday.  We’re having a little mini-vacation here this week before it gets cold again.

I’m outta here, hubby and I are going to take the dogs and escape to the country…  Carpe Diem!
