Gardener's Supply Deep Seat Garden Kneeler

 

Spring has sprung in Evansville and the warmer temps last weekend made me realize that I really needed a new garden kneeler.  My old one bit the dust, last year I used a bucket and it was quite a feat getting on and off the darned thing.

This isn’t my first rodeo with garden kneelers, some have wheels, which are good in theory but they don’t work in flower beds and they roll when you’re just trying to rock, so that was out.  My last one was too narrow, it wasn’t stable and easy to tip over, and yes of course I tipped the darned thing over, more than once I might add.

So I did the research online and was instantly smitten with this bright purple beauty.  It’s from a reputable company, and best of all it’s deep seated, which is perfect for the mature derriere, oh for Pete’s sake Jan get real, it accommodates big butts!  And best of all it’s purple, bright, vivid, glorious purple!!!

So I ordered it Sunday evening, it arrived today, folded into a cardboard box with no assembly required.  Whoa doggies, hubby was excited about that.  

It’s perfect, it really is, it’s nice and wide and stable, easy to get on and off of, and I also coughed up an additional $10.99 for the pouch that slips over one side to hold my gardening tools.  

Of course the cart is available in green, but why would anybody want green when they can have purple!

And the cost, not bad,  $49.95, plus $10.95 for the tool pouch, plus shipping.

And in retrospect I probably should have ordered their gloves, too.  Gardener’s Supply Company’s online catalog is just chocked full of amazing things, I have a feeling I’ll be ordering those gloves plus a few other necessities.

Okay all of you gardeners, I can see your wheels turning.  I know you like this spiffy purple cart, too.

Happy St. Paddy's Day!

The grandkids are all ready for St. Paddy’s Day, such a cute picture, just had to share.

I’m baking corned beef and cabbage this afternoon, it’s a blustery St. Patrick’s Day in Heavensville.  This isn’t the normal year for sure, March 17th is always my marker, usually the crabapple trees are in bloom, my  neighbor’s Mary Jane Magnolia is starting to pop, but not this year.  

I do have crocus blooming, and my daffy’s are budding.  Temps down to 25 degrees next week, that should nip everything. Grrrrr

Mother would have been planting peas today if she were in her prime.  She always had a big garden and planted her peas on the 17th.  Peas and new potatoes, oh my, what a treat that was.  So wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, Happy St. Patrick’s Day...

Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade

Thinning brows, just another problem for old(er) women.  I’ve been a fan of Anastasia products for awhile now, and have regularly used their Brow Wiz pictured below.  It’s a great product, a retractable pencil with a spoolie on the other end, it’s worked well for me.  

But I do like to try other products so I bought this Dipbrow Pomade ($18) at Ulta even though I was skeptical because it’s kind of a gooey consistency.  It wasn’t love at first try, either and I didn’t cough up the money for their brush/spoolie combo.  I already had a spoolie on the end of my Brow Wiz, and I had a thin angle brush, in other words, I cheaped out!  Well, that other angle brush didn’t work for so well, and after a few tries I was starting to get the knack of using the pomade, so I coughed up another $18 for the darned brush.  So worth it, if you’re going to do this, buy the brush!

 

I’ve used it for a few weeks now, and really like it.  The trick is to use it lightly and brush it out with the spoolie after you put it on.  What’s the big attraction?  It fills in your brows really well, looks good and it stays on all day.  I finish it off with Anastasia Clear Gel Brow Gel to keep everything in place, and I’m good to go.

If you think you might be interested, watch this video, this girl explains how to use it perfectly.  The only con I’ve found is that the blonde shade is dark.  I wish it went more toward golden blonde instead of brown, but it doesn’t so I deal with it.  If you try it, just give yourself some time, it’s a bit of a learning curve.  I think I’m making it sound harder than it really is, the trick is to have a light touch.

It’s a good product, I will buy it again, probably not for a really long time, though because you use so little of this it will last forever.  Watch the video, see if it’s for you, it really is a good thing.  ~ Jan

 

The Pioneer Woman's New Product Line

 

Ree is in Chicago at the Housewares Show. and this is her booth showcasing her new product line.  I’ve pointed arrows at some of my faves.  The Charlie the Cookie jar is a winner, also love the polka dot mixing bowl, the ramekins, just look at the arrows, you will get the idea.

I just bought the cow pitcher in a robin’s egg blue when we were in Franklin, TN. I’m sure there are other goodies in here as well, I need to zoom the image and check it out further. 

Here is her cookware line.  I’m a fan of the flowered covered casserole top left under the horses.  And I love her cast iron dutch oven with her signature butterfly on the lid.  Oh, the possibilities...

So here’s a first look Pioneer Woman fans, the line is debuting in stores this fall.  I’m sure you all can find a few goodies you like, as well...

Vintage Aprons, a blast from the past...

 

 

When I was a girl, women wore aprons every day.  I seldom saw my grandmother without one, my mother and aunts all wore them, it was just what you did.  Aprons were great for gathering things, their pockets held treasures for kids, it was warm, homey, it was comforting thing seeing a woman at a kitchen stove wearing an apron.

So why don’t I just dig out aprons and wear them?  BECAUSE, I have no waist, that’s why.  All I need is something emphasizing my past middle aged waistline.  Oh, vanity thy name is Jan.

Pioneer Woman’s new kitchen line debuts soon, how exciting is this?  Well it is, quit rolling your eyes!  I’ve always been such a fan of Ree Drummond, and yes, I know, I have enough kitchen products to last me beyond this lifetime.  But how will I be able to resist snapping up some a lot of her goodies.

C'mon winter, give it up!!!!

What a horrid day we’re having in Heavensville.  Snow is piling up, they’re forecasting 10-12 inches before this storm moves through.  The temps are in the high twenties, Mom always said we get the biggest snowfalls at these temperatures.  That’s the bad news, the good news is the weather forecast is in the 50’s for next week.  

Hubby braved the ice this morning to fill the bird feeders. I have a tree full of grateful robins, at least that’s making me smile.

We’re so over this winter….

Beauty Blender, is it really worth $20

 

You bet your bootie it is!  It’s worth every penny.  If you’re not familiar with a Beauty Blender, it’s a makeup sponge, and you’re thinking, "Jan, you’ve lost your mind, no way am I going to pay $20 for a little pink egg sponge."  Okay, hang onto that $20 but you’re missing out on something really great, you know I always share the good stuff, and trust me, this one is a winner!

 

I researched this extensively, cause that’s what I do, the majority of the reviewers say to not even try buying a knock-off, the foam isn’t the same, the knock-offs are hard and stiff and don’t absorb the makeup like the Beauty Blender, so you don’t get the same results.  C’mon ladies, it’s like going through Starbucks four times, just cough up the money for this.

 

What it doesn’t do is turn back time.  There is no way that we are going to take our aging skin and make it look young again.  You still have the sags, the wrinkles, oh aren’t I Miss Merry Sunshine this morning.  But what the Beauty Blender does is blend your makeup flawlessly.  I’m attaching Kandee’s video below, I did just what she did.  Got it wet, squeezed it dry with a towel and got started.  The only thing I didn’t do was apply the foundation directly to the Blender, I think you get more control by putting it in your palm and then dabbing the blender in it.

 

So I stippled on my foundation like she did in the video, wow, it did to go on smoothly, just like she said, no lines of demarcation, no unevenness, it worked amazingly well.  But did I quit, oh heck no, I just kept going.  I dabbed my concealer in it, put it on, went on smooth as silk, then I dabbed my loose powder in it and did the same.  And I still kept going, I used it to apply my powder blush and I actually dabbed it in my beloved MAC eyeshadow and applied my eyeshadow with it.   Smooth, smooth, smooth, totally blended, easy, fast, it’s a winner.  This thing rocks!  I didn’t spend more money for their cleanser, I just used baby shampoo to rinse it in, and yep, it immediately stains, but  who cares.  The reviewers also say it works great to rinse it in Dawn Dishwashing Liquid.  They also sell it in white and red.  White, I don’t think so, and I’m not a fan of red, pink works for me.

 

This thing is a staple from now on for this old makeup junkie.  Do you want one and not leave your house?  Get it from Nordstroms, free shipping, it will arrive in a few days.  Why not Amazon?  Because reviewers say that sometimes they are knock-offs from Amazon, and I didn’t want to chance it.  I didn’t want to wait, so I got mine at Sephora, don’t try Ulta, they don’t have it. But it’s a cold day,  it’s snowy, it’s winter, just order the darn thing.  You can get it from Beauty Blender’s site, too, but they don’t have free ship like Nordie’s does.

Eyelash Curler Tip

 I’ve been curling my eyelashes since the stone age.  I distinctly remember the first time I used an eyelash curler, I was probably fourteen or fifteen, I didn’t know what I was doing and I clamped both the upper and lower lashes at once.  Wowza!!!!  Comprehension has never been my strong point, and that little incident was painful beyond words.  But I persevered and have been curling daily ever since.

Now comes a new way to do it.  I saw this video on Facebook yesterday and was intrigued.  I got up this morning and tried it, and it really does make a difference.  Now you have to remember that at my advanced age, eyelashes are not what they used to be, they’re sparse, yeah, sparse that’s a good word.  But I did this little trick, slightly apprehensive that it would hurt, but it didn’t, and they're definitely curled.

So give it a go, what else do you have to do this dreary winter day.  We’re getting more snow tomorrow,  they can’t forecast how much yet, anywhere from 6 to 13 inches.  THIRTEEN INCHES, oh surely we won’t get that much!  My crocus won’t be up until June at the rate we’re going….

The robins have arrived in Heavensville

They’ve been flocking to my bird feeder this morning, sometimes as many as twenty at a time.

You know what this means, don’t you?  Spring is coming!!!!

I look at the snow covered around and it still seems so far away, but it won’t be long now.  Soon, very soon...

The Barnyard...

First came roosters, then came pigs, then Clover the cow came to live on my cabinet door.  And now more cows have invaded the dining room.

Where will it end?  Is this it, am I finished.  Nope.

That clock and those plates just don’t look right with that cow, they’re too fussy.  They need to go, and that lamp on the shelf, it’s not right now either.  And I don’t like the pitcher with the grapes.  One thing leads to another and the search is on!

What I really like this is this Holstein cow head.  Just having a hard time pulling the plug on the price, and it’s too big, the scale is off.  And hubby isn’t a fan, one mounted cow head in the kitchen is enough.  

Antique Farmhouse does have this mounted pig head.  But it’s kinda creepy, definitely passing on this.  But, a mounted rusty rooster head now would be nice, that would work.

I think I’ll email Decor Steals about it.  Yeah, sure thing, like that’s going to do any good.

And why am I posting all of this?  It’s February, it’s snowy, there isn’t a lot going on and I’m seriously lacking any ideas for content.  And if I work this through in my head, maybe it will help.  And yes, I know I have too much stuff on my dining room table, but Mikey likes it...

Industrial Warehouse Cart Redo

 

Back in November I blogged about the industrial warehouse cart we bought at an auction.  Here’s a link to the the original post.

Hubby redid it for me, it took several days and Mother Nature didn’t always cooperate.  But he finished it on a warm November day and it’s now in the den.  It had a wooden handle that the workers used to pull and push the cart with, we weren’t going to use it, but decided it needed to be complete, and it’s a great hat rack.

The picture below is the what we started with, and above is how it looks now.  He sanded the top but left some of the paint, the wheels were rusty beyond belief, I wish I wouldd have had a before picture.  He soaked each piece of steel  in vinegar overnight and then wire brushed to remove the rust.  We stained the top, then applied several coats of polyurethane, and it turned out even better than I expected.   It was such a fun project, and our total cost, including materials and several gallons of vinegar was under $150.  Great price, great job, hubby!

Vacation 2015

 

Vacation 2015 stars a grown up Rusty and his family.  Will it be a hit or a miss?  I’m not a fan of remakes, except for The Thomas Crown Affair, which was much better than the original.

This does have Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, so that’s a plus.  Will I watch it?  Oh yeah, I’ll be there, front row and center checking it out.  Coming October 2015...

This Siberian cold front is brutal, BRUTAL!!!!

Okay, so it’s cold, and we have snow, and did I mention that it’s cold???

We have had such a mild winter, we’re spoiled, but boy did we get blasted this week.  Hubby and I ran errands yesterday, it was so windy that the blowing snow felt like needles piercing our skin.  And this morning it was -4.  Brrrrrrrr...

Oh, whine, whine.  It will be over soon, spring is only a month away.  When Abby was two, she was visiting and was playing barefoot by the creek on March 17th.  Seems unreal, but it the weather was wonderful. 

What can we expect this year?  Mother always said, early Easter, early Spring.  And Easter is April 5th.  A girl can only dream...

Leslie Gore Dies at 68...

 

The year was 1963, I was thirteen years old and I thought It’s My Party was the “coolest” song, ever!  I loved Lesie Gore and copied her flip hairstyle, sleeping in those rollers every . single . night.  She died of lung cancer, today.  R.I.P. Leslie, you left us too soon.

Monday's With Marlo...

Wow, are we getting snow this morning in Heavensville.  Hubby ventured out to put out the trash and fill the bird feeders.  They are right outside my sunroom window, I sit at my computer and watch them, and they are just flocking to the feeders to eat. Woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays, sparrows, you name it, they’re on here.  It’s a good thing, feeding the birds, just giving a bit back to help Mother Nature.

I don’t know if you are all familiar with Monday’s with Marlo, if not, you might enjoy giving her a watch.  She posts a new video every Monday morning, interesting topics, and there’s not much else to do this morning.  It’s a curl up and read, veg out in front of the tube, make a pot of soup, play around on the internet kinda day.

Abby came home from school today with this Valentine Card for mama.  She’s the only girl in a class with all boys, and her teacher has two sons.  Looks like the teacher had a lot of fun dressing her up for this picture.  Love the camera!

She is such a darling little child, our Abby.  My grandchildren are all the sunshine of my life.  

The Galloping Gourmet Spurtle

Does anybody remember this blast from the past?  I’ve always been a foodie and back in the early 1970’s, Graham Kerr’s tv show “The Galloping Gourmet” started the trend, he was the first cooking show I ever watched.

He was this goofy English guy who cooked food that I would never make, but he did have great wooden kitchen spoons that he called “Spurtles.”  They even gave them away in cereal boxes, but I bought a set of them from an address he posted on his show. They’ve always been my favorite kitchen tools and they’re still going strong all these years later.

Pictured above is my collection, and yes I use that Bakelite Grease Jar.  I low carb, I always have bacon grease.  I’m going back to my roots, people, my mother always had a jar of bacon grease next to her stove, I bet yours did, too.

But back to the Spurtles.  I’ve picked up additional sets and individual pieces when they’ve been available on eBay through the years and now have quite a collection.  Some of them have holes in them, some are shorter, some are angled,one is a spatula,  but the traditional Spurtle is the one I use over and over again.  It’s the long one with a curved bottom and straight side.   They all have the GG Emblem burnt into the handles and they’re my treasures, I’ve used them daily since the 70’s.

Oh, The Galloping Gourmet, he was one of a kind, there were no retakes on this old television show, they were taped before a live audience and what you see is what you got.  Funniest thing I’ve seen in ages.

And then I found this other video of a lady demonstrating her Spurtle.  She’s a little, ummmm “odd”  and she totally cracked me up just watching her.  She’s very passionate about her Spurtle, but she does a fair job of explaining how it works.  Oh, my, the things you find on YouTube.

 And finally, if all this talk of spurtles is making you think you have missed out all of these years, you can still get one.  Not the original, but this guy on Etsy has copied the design and is selling them for $20.  

Here’s the click, I would so invest $20 in one of these if didn’t have my original collection.  What’s so good about them other than nostalgia?  They are just designed so well, they have a curved bottom that gets in the corners, a straight edge that cleanly stirs sides of pots.  Oh, just buy the damn thing, trust me it’s a good thing.  ~ Jan

Martha Stewart and Johnson's Baby Oil, My Find of the Week...

Martha Stewart Living is revealing her beauty secrets,  Well, you have to admit, whether you’re a fan or not, she is 73 years old and looks good.  I know, I know, she’s had work, but it’s good work!

Anyhoo, she said in an article in Martha Stewart Living that she uses baby oil and a warm washcloth nightly to remove makeup and moisturize her face.  So I gave it a try last night, oh it was wonderful, it smelled divine, and did a great job, this one’s a keeper for sure.  And this isn’t the only thing that I’ve learned from Martha, a few years ago she said that “Brown Down” was one of her favorite MAC Shadow shades.  So of course, I bought it right away, and she’s right, it is a good thing.  But then, Martha is always right, isn’t she, just ask her.  Bad Jan, Bad Jan...

Lexi's on the move!

Sweet bebe Granddaughter is growing up.  Her mama posted these pictures on Facebook yesterday and said that she has figured out reverse, now she’s working on forward. 

Wish I could just reach through this computer and smush those sweet little cheeks!

Her hair is curling now.  She’s hanging with her bestie, Izzie in this picture  I’m thinking that Izzie really loves Lexi now that she drops morsels  for her to eat.

Yep, these two are quite a pair.  Iz is just patiently waiting for one of those Puffs to drop. She’s a Gerber dog now. :-)

The Second Best Marigold Hotel

 

 

If you didn’t see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, you missed a great movie.  But guess what, it’s back!  The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is due to be released March 6th. 

You know, everything comes full circle.  It’s hard to find an age appropriate movie for children, and it’s hard to find one for adults of a certain age.  This is a movie I will actually spend the big bucks to see as soon as it comes out.  Can’t wait!  Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, a fantastic cast, what’s not to love!  The first one just assaulted your senses with magnificent color and wonderful acting.

One Cup Coffeemaker Review

 

 Yesterday morning hubby announced that my Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Coffeemaker was officially kaput.  He took it apart, blew out all the lines, cleaned the filters, it was the pump, it was dead, Fred!  My gut reaction was to go screaming through the streets, because this is the 3rd Cuisinart SS-700 that has bit the dust.  That’s right, the third!!!  The first two broke within a short window and Kohl’s replaced them, this one has been chugging along since 2012, and research says that the life of these machines is about three years, I guess it was time.

So yesterday I was on a mission.   I had a $55 credit at Kohl’s, and a 30% off coupon, but they had jacked the price on the SS-700’s up to $269 and it was only available in black, they no longer carry it in silver.  Well, black + yours truly = disaster.  I detest black appliances, they show spots and I’ve got better things to do than wash the darn thing daily.  That’s why I went to K-Cups in the first place, convenience and no clean-up except for sporadic maintenance.  So Kohl’s was out, I’ll just use that $55 credit for some new jeans.

Now being the logo queen that I am, I did go to Starbucks and check out their Vessimo.  After all they have a retro one that is pretty cute!

It also makes expresso and latte’s, but that’s where the wow factor ends.  Here’s the cons:

• It has a 33 ounce water storage capacity.  My Cuisinart has an 80 ounce, resulting in almost three times less to fill the tank than the Vessimo.
• It only uses Starbucks pods.  They don’t have a large selection, and here’s the worse part, the darn things are $.99 each.  That’ way more spendy than buying my favorite Green Mountain Breakfast Blend at Sams in the bulk.  I don’t want to spend a dollar for every cup of coffee I make at home.
• It only says Vessimo on the top, nowhere does it say Starbucks.  Now this is the deal breaker, I know, I know, it’s ridiciulous and I’m just kidding, well, sorta.  I talked to their customer service rep yesterday and informed them that they need to come out with a white unit with the retro Starbucks Logo plastered on the side.  Now how cool would that be?  I would be all over that in a New York minute! She was probably laughing her rear off when she hung up the phone, but I just had to throw that out there, being the mouthy old(er) broad that I am.

Next is the Keurig.  Now I don’t want to offend anyone, probably 99% of people who read this and have K-Cup coffeemakers have a Keurig.  And they’re really good units, they really are.  But for some reason they don’t appeal to me, it’s all about the appearance.

It’s not a bad looking brewer, but it’s too futuristic looking for my taste.  And yes, I know it comes in red, but it just doesn’t ring my chimes.  Just a matter of taste.   Keurig’s look great in other people’s kitchens, they’re just not for me.

And now for the not so trustworthy Cuisinart.

I’m sure a lot of you think the Cuisinart is ugly, but for me it’s the best option, there aren’t a lot to choose from.  And it’s familiar, I like the look of it, the square lines instead of being round, and most of all I like the color and the backlighting.  I like how it makes a cup of coffee faster than the Keurig, too.  I just don’t like the fact that it’s undependable.  But doing my research, I’m finding that none of them are that reliable.  And it’s been a few years now, hopefully they are doing a better job with them.  

The price for the 80 oz. Keurig and the 80 oz. Cuisinart is pretty much the same, they’re both top of the line, so you’re gonna pay too much for them.  But that’s what you have to do to get that 80 ounce reservoir.  And where did I find the best price, good old Amazon Prime of course, $184.42.  Ouch, it’s spendy but it’s a must have.  I’m drinking a cup of leftover Starbucks from yesterday this morning and it just isn’t cutting it.  One more day and this little beauty will arrive in Heavensville, and will be plugged in and brewing a great cuppa joe.

So now I’ll go on to my next rant, I’m sure I have one.  I know you can’t wait...

Helen Mirren's Fall on the Red Carpet

The lady did it with grace, you’ve got to give her that.  

And why do I find this blogworthy?  Ummmm, is it because I fell kerthud out of a booth in the bar at O’Charley’s last week?  And no, I hadn’t been drinking, only a Diet Coke, but there was a step, I just totally connected with air instead of concrete and down I went.  I was with my friend, Peg, I think I scared her to death, poor woman.

And it wasn’t graceful, either!  Thank goodness it was slo-mo, I didn’t hurt myself, just my dignity.  Oh, isn’t old(er) age fun...

Diane Keaton's Hair Color, L'Oreal Age Perfect...

 

 

 

Diane Keaton has had many, many hair colors over the year, kinda like somebody else I know, *blush* but her new campaign for L’Oreal Paris Excellence Age Perfect Color had me running to the closest Walgreen to pick up a box.  I researched and found that she is “supposedly” wearing Excellence Age Perfect 9N, Light Natural Blonde Layered-Tone Flattering Color.

 

 

And so I’ll color my hair with it, and it will look nothing like the streaky look that Diane Keaton has.  They had a whole crew of professionals working on her, not to mention fantastic lighting, all I have is my makeup mirror and the kitchen sink!  Oh, I know it’s going to be be too light, but it’s February, what else is there to do for fun, except to screw up your hair color.  Well I did just buy that cow poster.  Geezy Pete, how much more excitement can a person stand in one day...

I found this on Antique Farmhouse today.  It’s a reproduction of a vintage 1899 print by F. E. Wright, and I thought Clover was a bit lonely a needed some friends.

So I scooped it up, price was right, it’s either gonna be a hit or a miss.  It will be here in a few weeks, I’ll update.  

Seems that my kitchen and dining room are turning into a virtual barnyard.  Now if hubby could just find our old cow bell in the attic to put around Clover’s head...

Bad things really do happen in threes...

 

Pardon me while i whine...

So the dishwasher has been making a weird vibrating sound for quite a while now.  Hubby deemed it was the pump, ordered a new one, spent most of yesterday installing it.  Nothing went right, it fought him every step of the way.  Plus he has a cold and didn’t feel like messing with it anyway.

I get up this morning, he’s got it installed, but hasn’t bolted it down yet resulting in tools and drills still in the kitchen.  I walk to the utility room, remembering that I had ran a load of clothes late last night and didn’t take them out of the washer.  SURPRISE!  The washer isn’t draining.  Okay, I can handle this, all I need is a cup of coffee.  Right????  WRONG!!!!!!  You guessed it, my coffee brewer is on the fritz!

I could cope if I just had a cup of coffee, I really could.  And after I just spent $40 at Sams on K-Cups last week, how dare it break!  I can cope with the dishwasher and the washing machine, but the coffeemaker, it’s just too much!!!!!!!

I’m lucky that I have a husband who is as handy as the Maytag Repairman, but he doesn’t feel well, the last thing he wants to do is repair appliances.  I’ve had my three bad things now, it can stop, and in the meantime I may just have to make a run to Mickey D’s for a quick java jolt.  Deep breath, Jan, deep breath...
