Out, damned spot!! Getting rid of age spots on the cheap…

5835_5885_3

We all have them, the dreaded age spots.  Years in the sun, genetics, whatever the reason for them, they are horrid and we just want them gone!

Whether you have the discoloration, the flat darker ones, or the raised moles, what would you say if I told you that you could get rid of them for under $10?

Intrigued, sure you are, and you can do it!  I read a few years ago about using Gel Wart Remover to get rid of age spots, and I’ve been using it ever since.  I asked both my dermatologist, and a family doctor if this was a safe way to remove them, they both said it was.  Of course they aren’t going to promote this, they get big bucks for removing age spots in their office.

Using wart remover is just like a mini chemical peel.  You put a dot of it on the age spot, let it dry, and peel it off.  In a couple of days you can repeat it, but don’t do it too often or it will burn your skin. You don’t see results immediately, but in a few days, you will see the age spot dry up and then you can peel it away.  Moles, of course take more applications, just be patient.  You feel a slight tingle when you apply the gel, this is normal.

When the spot is gone, you are left with a red dot where you used the wart remover, but that disappears quickly.  Of course you wouldn’t want to use this on spots that look “suspicious” but for regular, ugly age spots it works perfectly.  I may have blogged about this previously, and even if I have, it’s worth a repeat.

You can all write and thank me later for saving you so much money.  Now head out to the drugstore and give this a try, you will be impressed, pinky swear you will.

  1. Ok, so I've been using this gel this week. Today, the age spot on my face looked worse, but I'm hoping it's in the healing process. I've put neosporin and a bandaid to cover it this afternoon. Let's hope!

  2. Your face is going to burn slightly and peel. That's probably what you're seeing now. Don't put the gel on too often, give the healing process times. It may turn red, but it will fade quickly. Don't panic, it really does work well for those of us who have tried it.

  3. I tried this today. I hope it works. How long does it usually take for an age spot to go away?

    ReplyDelete
  4. It depends on how deep it is and how many times you treat it. I wouldn't put the remover on more than once a week, give it time to peel. Then look at it and if you need to do it again, reapply it. It might take 2-4 times for it to go away completely. You will initially have a red spot, but that will fade.

  5. I just want to say THANK YOU for publishing this miracle beauty secret. It is nothing short of amazing.

I'm 36 and I'm also an esthetician. I've recently been accumulating some very nasty sun spots and I went to the derm. She was prepared to charge me upwards of $1000 for creams and lasers, of course.

I did the gel wart remover treatment a week ago on several spots (one of them dime sized) and today the are completely GONE. I was skeptical and horrified when I did the treatment because my spots literally turned black. They stayed that color until the skin peeled away revealing brand new pink fresh beautiful skin. I am truly ecstatic. Some of these spots were over a decade old and they are completely gone as though they were never there - all for around $7.00. Words cannot express how happy I am. Again, thank you. You are a godsend.

  6. I used compound w fast acting liquid on a raised age spot on my chest. I used it maybe three times. It dried out the spot so I wound up just picking it off. This turned into a scab. Now the scab is gone and so is the age spot!

    ReplyDelete
  7. How long do you leave compound w on before you peal it off?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I put it on in the evening, and peel off the white thin coating the next morning. A scab will form and it will come off naturally in a few days. It really does work, it's amazing how well.

  9. Thank you for your advice. So far so good. It looks as though I have truly found a cure for my age spots. I am thrilled.

  10. I'm doing a test on my legs and arms tonight. If this works, I'm going to be ecstatic! More to come.

  11. Oh, it works, Cristy. Just don't rush it, it will take a few days to scab and peel off. And don't repeat it for a few days so it doesn't burn.

  12. Whoa! I've been studying your blog and researching this method before finally trying this 2 weeks ago. I
have a dime size brown spot on the side of my face for over a decade. Since I don't go out in the sun
alot and it developed in my 20s, I suspect it's a side effect from birth control. Anyhoo, I've had a
couple of IPL zaps on it, nothing. I've also had dermabrasion and nothing! I then went to get a consult
at a laser center and the doctor was trying to sell me sessions for about 500 and said it will take a
couple sessions and could be months. I didn't trust him while other laser centers wasn't sure how many
sessions. This was unbelievable!! And only 7$$. Thank you so much for sharing!! It took 2 weeks for me, it peeled off the 1st time making it lighter so I kept at it and today it finally peeled off and left pink skin. It's not brown anymore!!! Hopefully the pink skin fades too! Anything is better than brown! lol.

    1. Just curious if the pink ever faded to regular skin color… I have two brown spots on my four head from birth control and whenever I go out in the sun they get very dark. It's definitely not a mole or anything it's just an area of skin the size of a dime that gets darker whenever I go in the sun. If you tell me it works for you I just may try on one of them. Thanks!

  13. Jen, it's always red at first, like any burn, but it fades quickly. I'm glad it worked for you, it's really amazing...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Does it have to be the gel or would the liquid with the brush applicator work just the same?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it needs to be the gel because it's thick. You only want to apply it exactly to the spot.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Does it have to be the gel or would the liquid with the brush applicator work just the same?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ok thanks. I'll go buy the gel. I have alot of brown spots on my face and have tried everything Obagi, retin-a, laser, photofacial, natural cures etc.
Nothing has worked so far, I really hope this does.
    I'll keep you posted thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It will work, just don't panic when the spot peels and is red underneath, the redness will fade. You may have to repeat it, but give it several days before you do, so it doesn't burn. Brown spots on my face just peel right off and I'm left with pink skin underneath. It's going to sting a bit when you apply, it, but it really does work.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If the dried white part of the gel is washed off, instead of peeled off, will it still work?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is the following true? Someone posted this on the web: I have used the gel type on my hands and legs since you can really control where it is placed. Wart remover is just heavy duty salicylic acid that will kill the skin it is applied to. The whole brown spot will lift off. Once it does you might be left with a red spot which will heal.

Whatever you do don’t let the area scab up as that can cause scarring. Simply use something like Aquaphor to keep it moist. If you are worried about scarring you can spend 5-10 minutes each day rubbing it in to keep the skin soft. But it should not be necessary

    ReplyDelete
  21. I didn't go buy the gel because I'm lazy and already had the liquid. Anyway I put it on a pencil eraser sized brown spot on my forehead that has been there for 3 years. It turned it darker and a few days later after sweating alot from mowing the yard, and taking a shower, the brown spot came off when I was drying off from the shower. It was too soon for it to come off I thought so I put a circle bandaid with neosporin for 2 days. After that it was healed beautifully and looked like the spot was never there.
I am going to get rid of all my brown spots this way one small area at a time. After spending thousands of dollars on facial treatments that didn't work, I finally found something that works and that I can do myself. I couldn't be happier. I can't thank you enough for posting this, I wish I would've read this years ago.

  22. It's amazing, isn't it. Hopefully, others will read your comment and reallze that this really does work, and for practically no money! Thanks for commenting.

  23. I've put it on several spots last night. A couple which go really dark when I apply fake tan.
I've woken this morning and there nearly black. Omg. I hope they scab over and fall off soon!

  24. Any pharmacy where wart remover is sold. Works great!

    ReplyDelete
  25. How long do you leave it on for?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Leave it on until it turns dries, it usually turns white and you just peel it off, takes just a few minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi, does it work on flat spots?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tried it yesterday on several spots on forehead some pretty deep turned black the rest look like burns....hopefully they scab over and disappear I am starting a new job!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi, I decided to give this a go on my hand first.....not quite confident to try the ones on my face just yet.
I put compound w on a spot yesterday and peeled it off this morning. It took a layer of skin off with it - is that supposed to happen? It looks darker brown and red today and is oozing bit (not infected just from the skin coming off). So I put a bit of polysporin on it to help the healing along. Do I just let it heal now for a few days and repeat? Or should I have just left the compound w on it and let it slough off on its own?

    ReplyDelete
  30. It looks like skin coming off but I think it's just the residue that turns white. Just leave it alone now, let it heal and in about a week you can peel it off. What you're describing sounds normal. Don't repeat too quickly because you don't want to burn it

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks - I am pretty sure some skin came off. The residue was definitely white and dried hard - I left it on over night and when I peeled the white residue off some skin came off with it.....since it has been oozing on and off all day and is very tender- I will definitely leave it for the next week (it would sting way to much to even think about putting more on now - lol).

I wonder if when I try it on my next spot I should not leave the stuff on over night....maybe just a couple of hours instead - what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  32. You left it on too long. Just leave it on until it dries, less than an hour and take it off.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ive tried this three times
And the spot is still there what am I doing wrong?
I put it on and go to bed and peel it off in morning but it is still brown and doesn't look like its going away ?
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  34. It takes time for it to work, usually about a week,. It doesn't disappear overnight.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Any suggestions for wrinkles and sagging skin?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yep, Retin A not Retinol get a script from the doctor, generic is cheaper start with .025 strength. At first it irritates your skin so do it every few days and soothe it with Aloe. It really helps, also Vitamin C Serum from Timeless online

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am confused. Do you leave it on overnight or scrape it off in an hour? I can't peel it all off and have to wash it off. My spots just get darker and no peeling.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Peel off the white papery onion peel after about an hour. It will take several days for this to scab over and the scab will fall off. Initially it will be red, but this fades. Just give it time to work, it doesn't fall off overnight.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I did this last week and it totally worked! Happy! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sorry if I have repeat posts. I put the gel on spots on my sarms and legs over a 3 day period because I thought the spot should show damage in order to heal. They just got darker and didn't look like they would scab. So after repeating 3 days they are now red and brown and sting. Putting Neosporin and Vaseline on them. I hope they heal in in 5 weeks and don't scar. Guess I got excited about getting rid of these little nuggets. Will it heal ok?

    ReplyDelete
  41. i tried this enthusiastically and only did one round of it, in perhaps too many places - my hands, my legs, my chest. lots of scabs and healing and honestly, only a few brown spots have disappeared. i'm afraid to do another application because i'm still covered with the red marks left behind. a few places have still not healed and i'm a little worried about them. my legs look worse than before because now i look like i'm covered in red and brown spots! but on the few spots it worked, it really worked! there are about 3 that are gone but as i said, i did a lot of these all over so was hoping for a higher percentage of success. i wonder if i should try again, applying another round on the more stubborn spots. advice?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Susan, think about it, anytime there is a scab, you have a red mark and then it disappears with time. I'm not a doctor, just a normal person like you, who found that this works. You can reapply - I would give it a week or so and then reapply, don't rush it, and don't expect the redness to go away overnight. This takes patience, but it does work.

    ReplyDelete
  43. After reading your blog and hearing all the amazing results, I gave this a try. Eagerly, I put the gel on many dark spots scattered all over my legs. It's been 2 weeks now and the spots are worse now than they were before I used the gel. Is the healing time typically this long? And, how long does it take for the treated areas to not be darker than they were before?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Everybody's skin is differently, but when you disturb the skin it has to heal. If you were to have a scab on your leg from a cut, it would initially be dark and then fade. In my experience, this is what happens with wart remover. You need to give it time, you can't hurry the healing process.

  45. Peroxide helps remove dark spots... It really works... Use cotton ball apply peroxide leave in the dark spot for 10 secs... Then reapply for 20 secs... Then apply vitamin c moisturizer on skin
The next day you will the dark spot starting to peel...wash your skin gently .. Careful not to scratch your skin too much...peel off the dark skin.. You will notice your skin turn pink... That's okay it'll heal apply vitamin c moisturizer .. Your dark spot gone...

  46. In the comment above a lady had good luck with peroxide, you might research that as well. Everybody's skin is different .

  47. Hi! I tried this on a few spots. I did exactly what you said. I waited until the spots peeled off. Although they peeled off, there is still some dark left behind. Do you have to do it more than once sometimes? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I used the gel wart remover on brown spots on my face. I only applied the gel one time; left on for 15 minutes. The spots turned into very dark scabs; the scabs fell off in about 7 days. When the scabs fell off the brown slots were gone and there were slightly pink. The pink went away and I had fresh new skin. However, two weeks later my brown spots came back. I have not been in the sun.

  49. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

My doctor told me to use compound w and duck tape to remove a thick scar from my hand. I was looking up info on how compound w actually works (the white scab thing freaked me out) and came accross this post.

My biggest skin problem is having dark spots on my face from acne (that has been gone for years). NOTHING has worked and makeup can only do so much. I was eager to try this out and used the liquid (which is more like gel despite what the bottle says) because it's what I had on hand. NI tried it on two spots, got nervous after a minute, and peeled it off before it was completely dry. The next day I was disappointed that nothing had changed so I got brave tried again. This time I was going to do just one spot but got a little carried away and covered 10 ... all on my face. This time I waited until it dried plus another ten minutes before peeling off the creepy white scab.

The next day I looked like a meth addict with dark brown scabby spots all over my face! It was awful. I thought I messed up and was going to have giant scar spots along with my stupid brown spots. I did nothing. But then two days after that the first scab came off and WOWWW!!! A l light pink little dot replaced the 7-year-old brown spot on the bridge of my nose. Woohoo! Then more "scabs" came off when I washed my face that night. I now have two "scabs" left now and it's only been 5 days!

I can totally handle looking like a meth addict with my face covered in scabs for a few days if it takes away those dark spots!

Seriously, this is the best tip ever.
    Thank you for sharing!
    You've changed my life.

  50. I've been looking for a remedy for my age spots for so long and iam scared of having any derma procedure because when I develop a scar, it turns dark and takes forever to fade or lighten! So when I start developing unsightly age spots and for some reasons moles/freckles on my face i felt hopeless. I couldn't have any treatment or else suffer dark scars! It's a lose-lose situation!

But I kept on researching about getting rid of age spots and grain-size moles before they multiply. Then I came across this post on my Pinterest where I get great advice from ordinary people (not celebrity endorsing a product) like you and me. And i thought I'd give it a try (but the fear is there).

And so I bought the product, read and re-read (and re-read!) Jan's instructions. I started dabbing the age spots. I just put a thin coating and made sure the gel stays within the age spot borders. It stung and I knew it started working. I just kept it for an hour and a half and not let the gel dried hard which worked out well for me because the age spots turned dark overnight. It started to scab in the following days.

The next day I dubbed the gel on my mole (grain-sized) and i let the gel dried overnight. The next day I didn't peel off the hardened gel for fear of peeling off any skin underneath. I softened the gel with water and slowly lift off the hardened gel. So, my face has scabbing age spots and moles while I wait for them to come off. It reminded me of my chicken poxed-face when I was young! LOL!

And so the anxious waiting began... The first scab to come off was on the 5th day which was one of the moles. Voila! Pinkish skin! No black mole! I got excited for my age spots that I kinda helped (gently) the scab to come off! And again, pink skin! Im so impressed that I'm starting to treat others spots on my face knowing the timeline for the scabs to come of!

Now, I'm applying polysporin just to make sure it wouldn't scar or turn dark. And maybe apply hypo-allergenic suscreen when i go out so it wouldn't develop again.

But, A BIG HUG and THANK YOU to you JAN! for this amazing advice. More power to you and I'll be looking forward to your tips from now on!

    XOXO

  51. Wow, I read your post and all the comments/questions to be sure I was doing it right and it worked!!! I finally got rid of that awful brown spot on my cheek (about the size of a pencil eraser). It's been there for years and made me feel old. I love my face...no sun spot!!! Thanks.

  52. Hello!
Thank you for taking the time to create this post. I purchased the product and used it at night, placing the gel just big enough to cover the age spot on my hands and face. I waited an hour like you said and then peeled the white onion like layer off and fell asleep. It has been about three days now and there was no scab formation or changes to the age spots. I'm not sure if I did something wrong or if I should try it again, but it didn't work for me :(

Any tips would be helpful- Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Give it a few more days and if a scab doesn't form repeat the process. It will eventually work.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This really does work! It does take patience, but it works. The first day I tried it I left the gel on for an hour then peeled it off. The spot turned black the next day, but I left it alone. It took about 5 days for it to come off. When it did the spot was way lighter, but still there. I then put on more gel and left it on for an hour. The next day it was super dark red. It almost looked like a burn. I again left it alone. This time it took about 6 days for it to come off and when it did no more spot! Not even pink skin! It was my regular skin color. I think the trick is to leave the scab until it's completely ready to come off. If you pick at it that's when you get the pink skin that's not yet healed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi Jan; although everyone's healing process is different, typically speaking, how long should it take the resulting "pink spot" to fade back to normal skin color after the brown scab falls off? If I'm not being too personal; how long does it take the pink skin color to return to normal color in your particular case? i.e. 1 month, 2 months, 6 months, etc. Any feedback would be helpful; thanks Jan :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. They typically fade within a month, just use makeup and a dab of concealer until the redness fades. It's similar to a scratch healing.

  57. Ok, I'm in. I have couple on my face. And one on my arm. One Q I have is did you ladies that used this on your face wear makeup daily? Also, I read an article months ago about this and it suggested using Compound Wart freeze off. I purchased but never used it, I just found it. Anyone ever used this instead of the liquid? Thanks!

  58. I just spent almost $500 to have a few spots removed from my face. While lying on the table, freaking out about how much money I was spending, it occurred to me that she was using the same stuff that I used to get rid of a wart a few years ago! Imagine my surprise when I googled Compound W to remove sun spots and found your thread! I have already tried it on a few spots on my legs but haven't seen any changes yet. I'm so excited! No more $$$ spent on expensive potions that don't work and Dr visits!!!

  61. My girlfriend, who is also a nurse, told me about this. So I decided to try it. Note: do NOT try on an obvious place like your face! I did this and when I got up the next morning and peeled off the white scab, the spot was darker! I didn't know this was going to happen and so I panicked and called my friend. She assured me this happens and just to put makeup on it till it peels off. Literally 7 days later it can off and the spot was totally gone. I am on my 5th spot- mostly on my legs now- giving my face a break :) - but it truly does work. I have one that I think I need to do again because it faded but you can still see it. Literally drop on the liquid on the spot, let it crust over. The crust will wash off in the shower the next day and be patient for 6 more days.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I used the compound W Gel on 4 brown spots on my face. I was a little worried about it being my face but I heard such positive reviews from this blog I decided to just go for it! Everything Jan said was exactly what happened so be sure and read her instructions. DON'T be shocked when they turn much darker after you remove the "onion skin". DO NOT leave on longer than about 15 minutes or until they have turned white.Again, they will be MUCH darker- the same as if you would have had them lasered so have a good concealer on hand. Post treatment day one they were darker but had no real texture - just looked the same spot but much darker.By day three they had a rough dry appearance - slightly raised. That's what you want. Just make sure to apply vitamin e or like to keep them moist. By day four they started to peel. YEAH!!! 😄 I still didn't pick at them. That is very important. DO NOT try and rush the process. No picking! I took a shower and voila they had all fallen off after washed my face. They were light pink underneath. I applied some more vitamin e. If you wear sunblock they should not come back. Believe me, the pink skin is waaaay better than an ugly brown sun spot. At least the pink will fade in about 2 weeks till nothing is visible. Lastly, Jan is my hero!! This REALLY does work . Just be sure and follow the instructions and if you have a lot of them I would suggest no more than a a couple at a time unless you can lay low for a while as they will turn pretty dark. GOOD LUCK ☘️

  63. I know this is going to sound redundant, but this truly works. I am a caterer and hated having people see my hands. Yes your age spots will get darker, but patience is a virtue. My mother had a fit when she saw how dark they were, but when I showed her the the finished products she couldn't believe it. Thank God for the cheap fix! Some of us are not able to spend money on our looks like those in Hollywood!
